Common Travel Mistake #1: Overpacking
Rule of thumb: If you need to check a bag, you probably overpacked.
We never check a bag, especially if flying internationally. You’ve heard all the horror stories of people losing their luggage and having to buy all new clothes.
While this could actually be fun to get a new wardrobe, save yourself the stress and keep your belongings with you through your travels.
When you have only a carry on and personal item, you know where all your belongings are.
Take a look at our ultimate packing checklist for any vacation which includes the most important things you need to bring with you on any vacation!
Bring only what you think you will need. You can always buy something there if you forget something!
Mistake #2: Not enough shoes
Finally! A tip that involves shoes! Now’s your chance!
I always bring 2-3 pairs of shoes on any vacation. I try to pack shoes that can go with any of my outfit, and are also comfortable to walk in.
However, when walking miles on miles a day, your feet are inevitably going to get tired and hurt.
I have found that just changing into a different pair of shoes helps soothe your feet.
I always keep an extra pair in our day backpack, in case my feet start to hurt. Then I can quickly change my shoes and I’m good to go!
Here is one of my favorite shoes to bring! They are cute, comfortable, and supportive! I walked miles in these with zero pain!

Common Travel Mistake #3: Not booking tickets in advanced
If you plan on visiting museums, parks, churches, or anywhere that requires a ticket, book those tickets early!
There is nothing worse than waiting in lines for hours in the hot sun, or finding the attraction you wanted to visit is sold out. Don’t waste precious time during your vacation.
We always book tickets early, then print them out, and keep a copy on our phones.
Having both a paper and digital copy is important in case your phone dies, or you lose your ticket. It is better to be over prepared than get there and realize you lost your ticket!
Mistake #4: Booking Group Tours
We have never personally booked a group tour, but from the looks of them in our experience, it looks like no fun.
Members of the tour group get lost often, and attractions can get so busy it is hard to stay together as a group.
Personally, we enjoy touring at our own pace. Especially when it is hot, you are not going to want to stand in the sun listening to the history of a place for 15 minutes.
We found that just by walking around at our own pace, you can pick up bits of information from neighboring tour groups, and that is enough in our opinion.
Additionally, you will not have to worry about getting somewhere on time, and rushing through areas you are interested in.
Common Travel Mistake #5: Not preparing your phone
From using your GPS to looking up restaurant recommendations, you are going to be using a LOT of data on your vacation. If you are traveling internationally, make sure you plan for this.
Talk with your cell phone provider and see what plans they have for international travel.
We found it to be cheaper to buy daily data plans for around $10 a day. Our monthly international data plan would be around $100, so if you are traveling for under 10 days, opt for the daily plan.
Do your research, and see what works best with your cell phone provider!
Additionally, plan to buy one of these life savers, as your phone will definitely run out of battery! These saved us so many times throughout our travels!
Mistake #6: Not Planning Ahead
This tip might seem obvious, but it is so important! We suggest planning out each day, and writing where you will go, and what you will do. This will help prepare you for #3. Get yourself a cute planner and get started!
There are so many factors that can go wrong if you do not plan ahead: unexpected closings, holidays, attractions being sold out, etc.
Here is a list of European holidays to help you.
We also found that many churches and attractions are closed on random days of the week, so be mindful of this as well during your planning.
